About me.
My name is Mark Burke (the ‘e’ is silent 😉), and I am a technology professional living on Vancouver Island, BC Canada. I wasn’t always from here and have had the privilege of living in many places in Canada and around the world. Though born in Ontario, after 30 years in Manitoba, I consider myself a prairie boy.
Interests
My go-to media is generally movies/tv, video games, and books. I am generally a fan of science fiction and fantasy, but I like to keep pace with some classics as well. For non-fiction, my interests are all over the place dabbling in philosophy, and other areas as piques my interest.
The Land.
I respectfully acknowledge that I live, work and play on the unceded and traditional territory of the Quw’utsun, Malahat, Ts’uubaa-asatx, Halalt, Penelakut, Stz’uminus, Lyackson, Pauquachin, Ditidaht & Pacheedaht Peoples.
Many of the First Nations communities in the Cowichan region are Hul’q’umi’num peoples, who speak the Hul’q’umi’num language, within a larger First Nations group referred to as the Coast Salish People. Additionally, there are two First Nations part of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth peoples who speak Ditidaht.
Unfortunately, my early education and experiences did not provide me with an adequate understanding of First Nations peoples or the impacts of colonization, residential schools, the reservation system, and other important aspects of history. I am striving to change that by learning more.
